    The 2017 World Habitat Day was celebrated on 2 October under the theme “Housing Policies: Affordable Homes” to reflect on the state of towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. An event organised by the Ministry of Works and Housing in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development brought together stakeholders including development partners, civil society, private sector and the media.

  • EU and UN team up to eliminate violence against women and girls Sep 20, 2017

    Today at the United Nations General Assembly in New York the European Union and the United Nations launched a EUR 500 million Spotlight Initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. The EU-UN Spotlight Initiative was launched by the EU High Representative / Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica, together with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

    The 72nd General Assembly’s General Debate of the United Nations opens 19 September and run through 25 September. Ghana is represented at the General Assembly by HE President Nana Akufo-Addo and a delegation of Ministers including Hon. George Gyan-Baffour, Minister of Planning.

  • UNDP trains health workers on healthcare waste management Sep 19, 2017

    More than 300 health workers participated in a training on health care waste management, aiming to reduce infections and at the same time protect the environment, with special emphasis on waste segregation, storage and transportation. This activity forms part of the medical waste project being implemented by the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service with support from UNDP, and supports current efforts to phase out mercury use in the health sector in line with the provisions of the Minamata Convention that came into force in August this year. The UN in Ghana, lead by UNDP and UNIDO, is supporting the country in reducing its mercury use.

  • UN continues to support human rights as CSOs meet with diplomatic community Sep 13, 2017

    On 7 September 2017, representatives from Ghana’s human rights NGOs and the Diplomatic Corps met to further discuss the human rights situation in the country, as part of the ongoing Universal Periodic Review (UPR) which tracks the progress of Ghana’s human rights obligations and commitments. Ghana will be reviewed for the third time by the UN Human Rights Council in November 2017.

  • 72nd UN General Assembly opens on Tuesday, 12 September 2017 Sep 11, 2017

    The seventy-second General Assembly of the United Nations will open tomorrow, Tuesday, 12 September 2017. The Assembly’s annual general debate, when Heads of State and Government and other senior national representatives gather to present their views about pressing world issues, will open a week later, on Tuesday, 19 September, and run through Monday, 25 September. The Secretary-General will also present his report on the work of the Organisation immediately prior to the general debate.

  • President Akufo-Addo reconfirms commitment to the SDGs Sep 8, 2017

    At a Presidential Commemoration event on 7 September, the UN congratulated H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on his appointment by UN Secretary-General António Guterres to co-chair his group of Eminent Advocates for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and welcomed his appointment of a High-Level Ministerial Committee to oversee SDG implementation in Ghana.
